에로게임의 주인공에서 카메라 렌즈라니. 뭐. 예고했던 대로 DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex)계를 강타하고 있는 18-200 부르르를 두번째 주인공으로 삼아 이야기를 해보겠습니다. 이 녀석의 정식 명칭은 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor 입니다. 링크를 누르면 카탈로그로 연결됩니다.

서울의 도심을 걷다보면 한 두명쯤 거창한 카메라를 메고 있는 아마츄어 사진사들을 만날 수 있다고 합니다. 특히 청계천은 유명한 도심 출사지라지요. 그 거창한 카메라들이 DSLR이고 18-200부르르 군은 여러 카메라 회사 중 니콘의 히트상품입니다. 왜 부르르양이 아니라 부르르군이냐고 물으신다면 동호인들의 농담 하나를 소개해드리지요. "저는 부르르가 부럽습니다" 이 렌즈는 멀리있는 피사체를 찍기위해 렌즈를 돌리면 쑤욱하고 튀어나와 2배가까운 길이가 됩니다. 헉?

DSLR은 최근 디지털계를 강타하고 있는 블루칩입니다. 차후의 소비를 촉진한다는 측면에서 자본가들의 꿈이라 할만하고요. DSLR 동호회에서 흔히 들을 수 있는 말이 "그분(지름신)이 오셨습니다" 랍니다. 카메라 본체에 여러 렌즈를 교체할 수 있고 그 렌즈의 가격대가 5-6만원대에서 2-300백만원까지 쭉 늘어서있기 때문입니다. 꿈의 상품이지요. 비싼 모델을 구입한 소비자들이 자발적으로 인터넷에 사진을 올리고 널리 퍼뜨리며 한낮의 거리를 활보하며 가두선전까지 합니다. 블로그의 확산은 디지털 카메라와 DSLR 붐의 원인이기도 또 결과아기도 합니다. 제품의 기능 뿐 아니라 위세재로서 역할도 충분히 해내는 바, 헝그리 유저와 니콘(캐논, 소니) 귀족까지 서열도 존재합니다. 어떤 렌즈를 가지고 있느냐에 따라서. 사진을 잘 찍는 것과 비싼 장비를 소유하는 것이 별개임을 주창하는 "장비병"이란 용어가 널리 유행하고 있음에도 불구하고 비싼 것은 제 값을 하며 고수들은 다들 최고의 렌즈를 가지고 있다는 사실이 항상 '지름신'을 영접하게 만듭니다. 가히 최고의 부가가치 창출 상품이라 할만하며 니콘, 캐논 뿐 아니라 소니, 올림푸스 최근 삼성도 이 황금시장에 뛰어들었습니다.

18-200 부르르는 수많은 회사의 수많은 렌즈 중의 하나입니다. 한 가정에 하나 이상씩 디지털 카메라를 지니게된 이후 예전에는 신문기자 사진작가들이나 가지고 다니던 코끼리코처럼 커다란 카메라의 보급이 늘어난 사실 자체에는 그다지 놀라울 것이 없습니다. 그러나 하나의 렌즈가 발매시 (이하의 미국의 예입니다) 670달러 였던 공식가격이 1년이 지난 지금 750불로 상승하고 실제 거래되는 가격이 1000달러에 이른다면 어떨까요? 통상 디지털 제품의 가격은 출시 후 1년이 지나면 20-30%는 하락합니다. 미국의 유명 렌즈판매 사이트에는 이 렌즈를 선주문하고 기다리는 대기자가 1000명 이상씩 있고 "어디서 살 수 있습니까?"라는 질문에 끊이지 않는 렌즈는 사상 처음이라고 합니다. 한국의 경우도 크게 다르지 않습니다만 미국보다는 휠씬 수급상태가 좋아졌다고 합니다. 많은 사람들이 애프터 서비스를 받기 힘듦에도 불구하고 직접 일본으로 건너가 구입해왔기 때문이라고들 하죠. 한국에서 통용되는 18-200부르르 라는 별명은 이 렌즈의 중요 기능인 vibration reduction의 약자인 VR과 손떨림을 막아주기 위해 렌즈 자체가 미세하게 반대방향으로 떨리기 때문에 붙은 별명입니다. 절묘합니다.

18-200 VR의 인기는 개발자의 의도, 소비자 집단의 의도, 판매상들의 의도와는 별개입니다. 흔히 통용되는 방식으로는 "의도하지 않은 결과"라고 할 수 있겠습니다만 저는 "의도하지 않은 결과"라는 설명은 반쪽짜리라고 생각합니다. 18-200 VR은 어엿한 행위자이며 이 행위자가 여러 다른 장(Field)에서 가지는 영향력은 누군가의 의도를 벗어날 뿐아니라 기존의 의도를 변형시키고 재구축했기 때문입니다. 더 나아가 전용(appropriation)이라는 개념도 조금은 부족합니다. 통상 수용자들의 창조적이고 적극적인 수용을 지적하는 이 개념으로는 18-200 VR 자체가 왜 그리도 위력적인 행위자인지를 설명할 수 없기 때문입니다.

우선 이 렌즈는 사진전문가들과 일부 리뷰어들을 매우 불편하게 합니다. 본래 DSLR이란 <사용용도에 따라서 렌즈를 교체하는 디지털 방식의 사진기>(공식적인 용어정의는 아니지만 가장 중요한 특징입니다) 인데 이 렌즈는 혼자서 대 여섯개의 렌즈의 역할을 상당히 만족스럽게 해낸다는 군요. 그러나 간편하게 해외여행을 갈때 가져가는 Travel lens로서 18-200mm의 촛점 거리를 지닌 다른 렌즈들이 있었지만 부르르 만큼의 호응을 얻지는 못했습니다. 5인 1역이란 무리가 따름이 당연한데다 화질도 그다지 좋지 않았기 때문입니다.
그러나 18-200 부르르는 VR 기능을 지니고 있었습니다. 말씀드렸듯 손떨림 방지 기능인데 이 역시 사진의 대가들을 불편하게 합니다. "1/10초의 셔터속도에서도 사진이 흔들리지 않는 내공을 얻기 위해서는 최소 2년 정도의 수련과 수 만컷의 연습이 필요하다"고 주장해온 사람으로선, 쌩초보가 그 내공을 단번에 얻는 것이 얼마나 기분나쁘겠습니까? 대가의 아우라가 사라지는 순간이지요.
일반적인 소비자의 입장에서 18-200 부르르는 너무나 매력적입니다. 예술로서의 사진의 미학은 모르지만, 인물은 또렷하고 주위 배경은 예쁘게 뭉게지는 아웃포커싱 효과나 손을 대면 베일 것 같이 또렷한 사진을 원하던 이들로서는 주위가 조금만 어둡거나 먼 곳을 찍을 때 흔들리는 자신의 사진이 가장 또렷한 장애물이었지요. 흔들리지 않고, 멀리 떨어진 사람들을 (몰래) 찍을 수 있다는 점은 너무나 명쾌한 매력입니다.

그러나 부르르의 이상열기는 렌즈의 개발회사로선 그저 기뻐할 만한 현상만은 아닙니다. DSLR이 황금알을 낳는 시장인 이유는 사용자들이 끊임없이 렌즈를 교체한다는데 있는데 상당히 고가이긴 하지만 하나의 렌즈만으로 구매행위가 끝난다면 바람직한 현상이 아니지요. 발매 후 1년이상이 지난 지금도 초인기 상품의 공급이 원활하지 않은 이유 중의 하나이기도 합니다.
화질이 떨어진다, 손떨림 기능은 허상이다, 손이 떨리지 않는다고 해도 피사체가 움직이면 아무 소용없다, 렌즈 자체의 광학적 기능은 기존의 렌즈와 별 차이 없다 등등의 반론에도 불구하고 아마츄어 사진가들은 왜 18-200 vr을 계속 찾을까요. 수많은 카메라 관련 포럼에선 "난 막눈이라 이거면 충분하다"는 사용자들의 선언과 "저에게는 꿈의 렌즈입니다"라는 가난한 사용자들의 덧글이 이어집니다. 18-200 부르르는 초심자들에게는 구매욕을 불태우게할 만큼 적당히 비싸고, 전문가들의 최고 장비들 보다는 충분히 저렴합니다.
대형 렌즈 판매상들의 입장에서는 길게 늘어선 대가자 명단은 매우 골치아픕니다. <특판>이라는 이름으로 공식가격의 30-40%이상의 폭리를 취하는 중소판매상들을 무작정 따를 수도 없고, 쭉 늘어선 구매자들의 줄이 언제 사라질지 계속 살펴야 하는데다 도대체 다른 렌즈들이 잘 팔리지 않으니 말입니다. 그 결과 새 카메라를 살 때 끼워파는 렌즈의 수준이 대폭 올라갔습니다. 카메라 본체만 구입하기란 더욱 어려워졌습니다. 당연히 특정한 카메라와 렌즈만을 파는 중고시장(Ebay이 대표적입니다)는 대호황. 중고시장 즉 비공식 영역의 활성화가 공식시장의 축소로 이어진 셈입니다. 본래 렌즈들은 신뢰할 수 있는 주요한 판매상으로부터 구입해야 했으나 급작스레 중고품을 파는 개인들의 역할이 확대되었으니까요.

사회내의 행위자들로 하여금 무엇인가에 매혹되고 계속 달리게 해야 한다는 과제는 모든 사회공학의 핵심입니다. DSLR 시장의 부상과 인기는 소비사회에서 상품의 중요성을 보여주는 한 예라고 할 수 있겠지요. 그러나 새롭게 짜여진 황금시장에 등장한 초인기 상품, 18-200 VR은 그 황금시장이 지니고 있었던 최고의 원동력 즉 "앞에서 뛰고 있는 사람을, 더 비싸고 훌륭하고 멋진 상품을 사기 위해 몸부림쳤던 사회적 욕망을 오히려 수그러뜨리는 역할을 하게 되지 않았나 싶습니다. 5만원에서 300만원까지 쭈욱 늘어서 있던 긴 트랙이 갑작스레 나타난 60만원 중반대의 18-200 VR로 인해 뚝- 끊김 셈이죠. DSLR이라는 하나의 작은 장(Field)에서 쁘띠 부르조아들이 갑자기 부르조아지를 쫓으려 들지 않고 노동계급처럼 자신들의 미학을 지니며 경주를 멈추어 버린 셈입니다. 18-200 VR이 등장해 사람들에게 말합니다. "여기까지만 뛰어. 더 뛰어가봤자 별거 없어."
(이와 유사한 현상이 핸드폰 업계에서도 있었지요. 모토롤라의 초인기 모델인 Razr. 모두가 가지기를 원했던 엄청난 초인기 상품의 등장 이후로 핸드폰 시장은 크게 균열되었고, 모토롤라 사 자체가 디자인에 중점을 두고 기능을 축소시킬 수도, 기능을 위해 모양을 희생시킬 수도 없는 상황에 놓이게 된 것. 한국에서의 초콜릿 폰은 어떤가요?)
비인간 행위자는 때때로 인간 행위자보다 강력합니다. 카리스마를 지닌 정치가가 그러하듯 그것은 여러 곳으로 파고들며 오인되고 접촉하는 것들을 바꾸지요. 인간이 아님에도 불구하고 행위자(actor)인 것이 아니라, 인간이 아니기 때문에 강력한 영향력을 갖는 행위자가 되는 상황이 존재하는 것도 사실입니다. 결국 비인간 행위자는 사물을 의인화시킨 개념이 아니라 그 자체의 패턴과 특징을 지니는 행위자임을 인정해야 하지 않을까요?

흥미롭습니다만, 일단 의문이 드는 건 예컨대 저와 같은 non-human actor의 이론적 영역이 사실 이데올로기나 문화산업 또는 사물화 등의 개념적 장치들에 의해 분석되어 온 바 아닌가요? 비록 위의 개념들이 어느 정도 한계가 있고 그래서 새로운, 보다 포괄적인 개념이 필요하다고 할지라도 과연 이로 인한 사회과학적 계몽이 있는 건지 잘 모르겠네요.

흠 묵직한 질문입니다. 이데올로기, 문화산업, 사물화 등의 논의와 비인간 행위자(B. Latour를 필두로한 Actor-Network-Theory)사이에 차이는 그저 앵글의 차이일 수도 있습니다. 사회과학에서 '주체형성' (Subject-making)이 화두가 되고 푸코가 저자를 저자-기능으로 처리할 때 이미 그 터전은 잡혀있었다고도 볼 수 있고, 사회의 물질적 기반(material base)를 강조하는 대부분의 논의가 겹쳐 있지요. 인간행위자와 구조 human agency/structure 에서 행위자에 주목하는 일부 학자들은 극도의 적개심을 내비치기도 합니다. 본래 저는 페티시즘 (Fetisism)에 관심을 가지고 있다가 이 진영에 관심을 가지게 되었고 내심 비인간 행위자와 인간 행위자 각각이 분석도구로서 유용한 상황을 구분해야한다는 계획을 품고 있습니다. 아직 멀었다는 거죠. 뭐.

수업준비가 난데없이 걸려오는 전화 때문에 안 되는 중에, 자꾸 "청기 올려 백기 올려" 게임이 떠올라서 몇자 적습니다.
제 차례에서 이 글은 "청기 내리고 백기 올리지말고 청기 올려"라고 주문하는 것 같습니다.

일단 제 생각엔 이 "카메라" 렌즈사례는 패티시즘으로 보는 것이 더 타당한 것 같습니다. 이 "카메라" 렌즈는 DSLR 카메라라는 "바디"에 그 행위성(수행력? 묘한 번역입니다만 그러니까 perfomativity)이 종속적으로 제한되기 때문이지요. 그 마저도 니콘에 종속적입니다.

렌즈하나 달랑들고 옥상에서 반쯤 열린 옆집 창문을 들여다 볼 수도 없고, 목에 렌즈만 달고 거리를 활보할 수도 없지요. 물론 합체한 순간 즉 이 렌즈가 부착된 카메라인 한에서는 상황이 좀 달라집니다. 구매 욕망도 얼마간 합체욕망으로써만 존재하는 것이고, 게다가 이렌즈는 "합체"가 그 기술력을 구성하고 있습니다.
어쨌든 렌즈를 카메라라고 부를 수 없고, "바디"를 카메라라고 부를 수도 없는 분절된 "카메라"구성이 특정렌즈에 "디지탈 카메라"를 향한 욕망을 표출하는 조건인 것 같습니다.

한편에서문제를 좀 펼쳐서 보면 이른바 DSLR 이 기존의 필름카메라 SLR의 존재하는 렌즈군의 유용성에 맞춰져 그 형식적 모델을 발견했고, 이것이 기존 필카 유저들을 디카유저로 바꾸어내는데 결정적이었던 그 생성의 역사는 어찌보면 "신체없는 기관"으로써 신체를 생성한 흥미로운 과정을 생각해 볼 수 있겠지요.

사실 얼마간은 서로 다른 기술의 조합으로의 카메라가 분절하며 발생한 기술의 불균등성이 생산교란과 시장교란을 초래하고, 이 “물신적” 상황을 나은 것도 아닌가 싶습니다. 디지털 카메라의 바디 기술이 현재 답보상태에 빠져 있고, 그러니까 필카를 기술적으로 아우르는 순간에 발생한 가치화 장애의 조건에서 펼쳐진 상황 같아 보입니다.

어쨌든 제가 굳이 “이글로 보아 패티시즘이 더 어울 릴 것” 같다고 생각하는 건, 비인간 행위자를 "특정 사물"로 고착시키는 것 같기 때문입니다. 이것은 대개비인간 행위자를"사물의 특정 형식"의 물신화 속에서 찾는 것으로 나아가기 때문에 기존의 논의 범주의 그물에서 현현한 한 모델이 되지 않나 싶은데요. 빠진서님의 지적은 그런점에서 타당하다고 보여집니다.

하지만 저는 이른바 actor-netwok-theory 는 "사회과학적 계몽"이라는 근본적 질문을 해체하는데 상당한 시사점이 있다고 생각하는 "중" 입니다. 또 결국은 모든 사회과학은 “계시”를 “계몽”의 논리로 할 뿐이라는 어떤 인식론적 함의를 제공한다고도 보여지고요.

언젠가 빠진서님과 술마시면서 했던 이야기를 좀 변형하자면, "숲속에서 말타고 활든 사냥꾼들이 날아다니는 새떼를 쏘는" 상황을 이해하는데 유용해 보이기 때문이지요. 그런 상황안에서 플루크(뽀록이라고도 합니다만..Fluke)와 필연의 인식론적 경계는 소멸되고 "사냥"이라는 행위안에서 본다 해도 둘다 개별적으로 위험한 만큼 또 안전하지요.
별로 좋은 비유는 아닌것 같습니만 어쨌든, 그러니까 저는 비인간행위자를 승인하려는 경우에, 인간 행위자와의 차이는 힘의 역학관계나 형식적 차이에서, 혹은 근본적 차이에서 설정되지는 않는다고 생각합니다. 오히려 행위성-그것이 잠재성에 기반하건 의도성에 기반하건-자체의 실현과정에 부분적으로만 연관되는 그 일시성이 둘의 차이를 확증하고 "다른" 다름들을 만들어낸다고 생각되기 때문입니다. 인간행위자의 전일성이라는 것 혹은 그 전복도 결국 다른 다중 행위자들과의 일시적 부분적 관계 속에서만 생성되고 실현된다는 것이 이 이론의 한 함의가 아닌가 생각이 되는데, 나중에 좀 시간이 나면 공부 더하고 재밌어 보이면 말을 잇도록 하지요.

Fetishim에 따라다니는 비정상, 탈각, 과장, 치환 등의 단어가 어떤 <정상성>을 상정하는 것이 사실입니다. 비인간 행위자를 부각시키려는 제 의도에서 물신화의 냄새가 묻어있었는지도 모르겠고. 제가 강조하고자 하는 부분은 18-200부르르가 고착되거나 고정된 산물이라기 보다는 여기저기서 '일을 한다'는 점입니다. 마에스트로님의 마지막 단락을 저는 비인간 행위자들이 이곳 저곳으로 퍼져 기존의 관계를 바꾸며 자신도 바뀐다 고 이해했습니다만. 니콘바디에 합체했을 때, 카메라 포럼에서, 중고시장, 유명 판매상의 진열대에서 이 렌즈는 '기관없는 신체'로서 특징을 확실히 보여줍니다. 주어진 기능이 아니라 다른 기능과 역할을 생산해낸다는 점에서. 이론사 부분을 보강해 제대로 글을 써야할까요?

빠진서님과 까띠보.. 님의 글을 읽고, 또 제가 매우 흥미롭다고 느꼈던 부분에 대해 다시 생각하면서, 제가 무슨 이야기를 할 수 있을까 고심 중이었는데요. '어떤 물질이 인간(행위자)에 못지 않은, 혹은 그것을 능가하는, 사회적인 힘을 지녔다는 것이, 그 물질이 한 사회에서 (비인간)행위자로서 기능하고 있다는 이야기를 할 수 있는 근거가 되는가' 하는 점이 논점이 되고 있는 것 같습니다(맞나요?). 이에 대한 답글에 비추어볼 때 브라가님은 '사회에서 비인간행위자라는 지위를 설정하고, 이를 인간행위자와 구분하며, 거기에 어떤 독자적인 역할이랄지 성격(그러니까 문학으로 치면 일종의 어떤 비극적인 캐릭터이겠지요. 존재 자체가 비극으로 달려가도록 플롯화 혹은 프로그래밍된)을 부여함으로써, 양자가 모여서 구성하는 액터 네트워크를 찾아낸다'는 구상을 지니신 것으로 생각됩니다(논의를 잘 쫓아온 건지 모르겠군요. 게다가 쓰고나서 보니 '비극적' 운운 하는 것은 단지 저의 취향일지도 모르겠습니다).

그럼에도 불구하고 귀축왕이 되었든 부르르가 되었든 혹은 베짝이 되었든 브라가님의 글을 읽으면서 비인간행위자라는 개념에 고개를 갸우뚱하고 단지 페티시즘이나 문화산업의 분석과 무엇이 다른가 하는 의문을 가지게 되는 것은, 브라가님이 설정한 비인간행위자들이 탄생하는 독자적인 발생적 과정이랄지 그 논리 혹은 발생의 비인간적인, 그러니까 인간의 의도를 벗어난 불가피성(저의 19세기 산림에 대한 글에 댓글을 다셨던 라구르님의 용어를 차용하자면 부르르와 귀축왕의 '생리'겠지요)과 같은 것들이 보이지 않고, 그저 이윤의 추구라든가 경쟁이라든가 쾌락 혹은 재미의 추구와 같은 참으로 인간적인 동기들(만?)이 부각되어 보이기 때문이 아닌가 하는 생각이 들었습니다. 사실 인간이라는 것이 위대한 탐구주제의 하나인 것은 그것이 인간의 힘으로 어찌할 수 없는(그러니까 통제할 수도 설명할 수도 없는) 어떤 힘을 가지고 있는 것으로 여겨지기 때문인 것이 아닐까 하는 생각도 듭니다. 그런 면에서 부르르나 귀축왕, 베짝은 인간적으로 설명될 (수 있을) 거 같다는 느낌이 딱 하고 드는 게 아닌가 하는 거죠.

물론 이건 제가 부르르나 귀축왕, 혹은 베짝의 세계를 잘 모르기 때문일 수도 있을 것 같습니다. 예를 들어 저는 산림과 농업, 거주지와 인간의 관계에 대한 설명에서 브라가님이 언급하신 '인간행위자와 비인간행위자가 결합된 액터 네트워크'와 같은 것들이 작동할 것 같다는 생각을 까띠보님과 이야기를 하면서 갖게 되었는데, 그런 생각을 가질 수 있었던 것은 그들 사이의 관계에 대해 제가 어느 정도 미리 정립된 생각이랄지, 그런 것이 구성가능하다는 그것들에 대한 일정한 자료에 대한 감을 가지고 있었기 때문일 수도 있을 것 같습니다. 같은 맥락에서 브라가님은 부르르나 귀축왕 혹은 베짝에 대해서 그에 해당하는 뭔가를 가지고 계실지도 모르겠고, 그 점이 설명이 되지 않았거나 덜 되었기 때문에, '이게 페티시즘 연구 아니냐' 라든가 '문화산업과 이데올로기, 상징투쟁의 장(들)에 대한 기존의 다른 분석과 뭐가 다르냐'든가, 이런 반응이 나올 수도 있었겠다는 거죠.

그런 식으로 생각해보면, 제 생각에는, 이 물질들의 발생적인 과정에 대한 역사적이고도 생리학적인 설명이 필요한 것이 아닐까 싶습니다. 그것이 갖고 있는, 인간적인 것으로 환원될 수 없는, 어떤 독특한 질에 대한 이야기말이지요. 가령 소재의 문제(경통 소재의 성격상 더 늘릴 수는 없다든가)라든가, 렌즈(부르르 자체 말고, 부르르가 갖고 있는 여러 장의 렌즈들)의 굴절능력의 문제라든가, 혹은 귀축왕의 가슴의 크기의 가능성의 한계의 문제라든가(근데 참 부르르가 여자라는 건가요 남자라는 건가요? 봐도 잘 모르겠던데..) 뭔가 그런 차원 말입니다. 그래야 이게 마치 살아있는 개체('기관 없는 신체'라는 게 그런 뜻인가요?)처럼, 비인간 '행위자'처럼 보이게 되어 인간인 행위자들과 액터 네트워크를 구성하게 되는 게 아닐까요?

분명히 이 긴 댓들을 뭔가 한 마디로 정리할 수 있는, 총평 격의 한 문장이 있을 터인데.. 그게 딱 나와주지를 않는군요. 생각나면 마저 쓰지요.

  말씀드렸던 마지막 한 마디 총평은 아니고, 제가 쓴 댓글을 다시 읽으면서 한 마디를 추가해야겠다는 생각이 들었습니다. 다른 분들은 어떠실지 모르겠습니다만, 적어도 제게 있어서는, 그렇다면 뭔가를 설명한다는 것은 그것을 설명할 수 없는 어떤 것으로 만드는 것과 사실상 같은 뜻이라는 건가? 하는 생각이 들었습니다.
  그리고 또 한 가지 궁금한 것은, 결국 18-200 부르르의 그 의도되지 않은 성격이라는 것은 결국 니콘의 개발자들에 의해 기술적으로 면밀히 탐구되고 담당파트의 최고경영자와 핵심간부들에 의해 산업적으로 폭넓게 검토된 결과이지 않은가 하는 점입니다.

일단 라투어니 뭐니 하는 사람들이 실제로 어떤 논의를 하고 있는지 전혀 예비지식이 없는 상태라 좀 끼어들기가 거북합니다만... 문제를 제기한 사람으로서 복지부동하고 있는 것 같아 좀 부연을 합니다. 사실 위에서 제가 의문을 제기했던 것은, 소위 비인간 행위자라는 제안이 무엇을 사유의 대상으로 삼고 있는지 잘 이해가 가지 않았던 측면이 있어서였는데요. 일단 우리가 (철학적으로는 agent라는 하는) 행위자를 얘기할 때, 일반적으로 전제하는 몇 가지 내용은, 첫째, 우리가 인과적 설명을 추구하고 있다는 것, 그리고 이때 행위자는 이 원인제공자라는 것, 둘째, 이 행위자에게는 몇 가지 선택할 옵션이 주어져 있고, 또 그에게는 선택할 수 있는 능력과 자신이 선택한 것을 수행할 능력이 있다는 것 등입니다. 따라서 비인간 행위자라고 할 때, 우리는 그에게도 선택지가 주어져 있으며, 또 어떤 자유의지와 같은 것이 있으며, 그 자유의지에 따라 뭔가를 수행할 능력이 있는, 그러니까 어떤 새로운 차원의 행위력을 정의할 수 있고 이를 정당화할 수 있느냐 하는 문제가 있을 것입니다. 이 점이 제게는 좀 설득력이 약해 보였던 거고, 그래서 우리가 일반적으로 인간 행위자의 범주를 넘어서는 문제에 대해, 그러한 이론적 영역에 대해 사안에 따라, 구조니 이데올로기니 사물화니 페티시니 하는 이름을 부여해왔다고 여겼고, 또 철학적으로 이런 부분은 예컨대 칸트의 숭고와 같이 전통적으로 미학의 사유 대상이었습니다. 과연 비인간 행위자라는 제안이 이러한 논의들에 어떻게 답하고 있는지, 정말 진지하게 답하고 있는지, 어떤 사유를 추구하는지 알고 싶었습니다. 아마 제 부연이 위의 낙장불입님의 댓글과 연관이 될 것 같습니다만....

위의 다이어그램의 출전은, Nigel Thrift 1996, Spatial Formations, Sage Publications:London.Thousand Oaks. New Delhi 의 99쪽입니다. 98쪽에서100쪽 까지가 이 다이어그램에 대한 설명이고요. 그 설명을 간단히 요약해보겠습니다.

"다섯 가지의 무지"의 타입이 있다.
첫째, 알려지지 않은 지식(knowledge that is unknown): 단순히 역사와 공간에서의 위치상의 한계 때문에 사회 구성원들에게 알려지지 않은 지식
둘째, 이해되지 않는 지식(Knowledge that is not understood): 한 사회, 사회 집단 혹은 특정 지역에 사는 사회집단의 "앎의 틀" 안에 있지 않은 지식
셋째, 논의되지 않는 지식(knowldege that is undiscussed): 당연한 것으로 받아들여져서 논의되지 조차 않기 때문에 알 수 없는 지식
넷째, 숨겨진 지식(Knowledge that is hidden): 적극적으로 그리고 의식적으로 숨겨진 지식
다섯째, 왜곡의 결과인 무지(unknowing that results from distortion): 전통적인 믿음이나 지식 혹은 특정 사회집단의 속임수의 결과인 무지.
다섯가지 무지 중 첫번째 것만이 역사적인 상수(historical constant)이다. 즉 특정한 시대를 설정하는 한 변치 않는 무지. 나머지는 사회내에서 지식이 분배되는 양상에 따라 계속해서 달라진다.

이런 요상한 그림을 '공간'이라는 표제하에 소개하는 이유는, 공간이라는 게 객관적인 공간/주관적인 공간으로 깔끔하게 갈라진다기 보다는 보다 다양한 이유로 인해 달리 만들어진다는 사실을 말하고 싶어서입니다. 보통 '알지 못함'이라고 하면 아는 것/모르는 것으로 양분될 수 있는 것처럼 보이지만, 위 학자의 예를 따라가면 여러 타입의 무지가 있는 걸 알 수 있죠. 저자 스스로 지적하듯이 첫 번째 무지는 요지부동이지만 나머지는 서로 막 섞이고 바뀔 수 있습니다. 근데 이 요지부동한 '무지'란 무슨 짓을 해도 알 수 없는 것이기 때문에 '없는 것'과 다름 없겠죠. 즉 정말로 알 수 없는 것이기 때문에 거기에다 이름을 붙이고 논의를 한다는 것 자체가 불가능합니다. 중세에는 현미경이 없었기 때문에 세균의 존재를 알 수 없었다는 건 첫번째 타입의 무지의 예겠지만 그렇다고 기술이 발달했다는 21세기엔 세균이 얼마나 알려져 있을까요? 여기서 "우리는 세균에 대해 아직 완전히 알지 못한다"고 말하는 건 아무 의미가 없습니다. 두번째에서 다섯번째 까지의 세균에 대한 무지가 우리가 말 수 있는 무지입니다. 즉 말할 수 있는 무지는 지금 어딘가에서 누군가에게는 지식인 것 뿐입니다. (완전히 안다는 거 자체는 불가능하죠?)

'공간'이라는 단어가 제가 매력적인 이유는 그것이 무엇인가가 나뉘어져 있고 또 나뉘어지고 있는 모습을 쫓아가는데 영감을 주기 때문인데요. 니겔의 지도는, 지도란 각기 다른 지도작성방법에 따라 무언가를 보여주면서 가리는 행동의 결과라는 점을 드러냅니다. 그의 지도가 가리고 있는 건, 마치 둘째에서 다섯번째 사이에 경계가 그어질 수 없다는 거겠죠. 비난할 생각은 없습니다. 그가 무엇을 하고 싶어 했는지 그 그림을 그리면서 어디에서 어디로 가려고 했는지를 알아채면 그만이겠죠. 그가 말하고자 한 건 무엇이었을까요? 그림을 아래쪽을 잘 보면 알 수 있지 않을까..

맨 아래쪽 부분을 보면 타원의 반쪽 + 볼록 튀어나온 부분이 '알려진 것' 즉 지식입니다. 즉 지식은 "한 시대와 지역에서, 의미있는 것이라고 받아들여지는 것 중에서, 논의가 이루어지는 것에 한정됩니다. 더욱 심각한 건, 논의되고 있는 것 중에서 숨겨지지 않고 드러나 있는 것만이 지식인데, 드러난 것은 두 가지의 경우의 결과죠. 첫째, 숨기려 했지만 우연히 드러나 버렸거나 둘째 드러낼 필요에 따라 전면에 나와있는 것(왜곡이라는 표현은 좀 오해의 소지가 큰 것 같습니다). 이렇게 지식을 정의하면 지식이 진리라고 말하기는 좀 쑥스럽죠. 그래서 그는 그림 한가운데 조그마한 작은 원을 그리고 여러 경계가 불분명한 곳에서 <진리>라고 수줍게 이름을 붙인 것이 아닌가 싶습니다. 지식 중에서 진리란 숨겨진 것은 아니고 분명 '생산'된 것이지만, 누군가에겐 숨기고 싶은 것이고 특정한 사람이나 집단의 계획과 의도의 결과라고 말하면 너무 슬퍼지겠지요. 더욱이 그는 '왜곡"이라는 매우 강한 표현을 썼으니까요.

'내가 아는 것"을 아는 건 이리도 복잡하군요. 아니 내가 안다고 생각하는 것을 설명해내는 것은 정말 힘겨운 일이라는 생각이 듭니다. 그것만 잘 추적한다고 해도 엄청난 작업이 아닐까 하는 생각. 이 학자가 그림까지 그려가며 열심히 지적해보려고 했던 것이 아마 공자의 말이 아니었을까 추측해봅니다.

아는 것을 안다고 말하고 모르는 것을 모른다고 말하는 것이, 아는 것이다.

덧붙임: 관찰이 인터뷰를 대체하는 주요한 앎의 수단이 될 수 있다면, 지식이란 특정한 시공간에서 의미있는 것 중에서도 논의의 대상이 되고 숨겨지지 않은 것이기 때문일 것입니다. 다시 말해 사람들에게 무엇인가를 묻는 통상적인 인터뷰가 어떤 사회내에서 유통되는 말(기존의 담론)에만 기대고 있다면, 그 인터뷰의 결과란 위의 다이어그램 안의 경계선은 전혀 바꾸지 못할 것입니다. 방법론으로서의 인터뷰가 그저 정보를 축적하기 위한 메뉴얼이라면 그 결과 나오는 지식 자체가 연구대상의 사회와 연구자의 사회 양자의 역사적 맥락의 교집합 안에 갇히게 되겠지요.
실상 제목만 슥- 보고도 논의의 흐름과 결론을 예측할 수 있는 논문은 참으로 많습니다.
반면 관찰이란 저 위의 다이어그램에서 상대적으로 자유롭다고 생각할 수 있지 않을까요? 무엇인가를 관찰하는 행위는 <논의가 이루어지고 있고> <유의미하다고 받아들여지고> <드러나 있는> 대상에 한정되지 않습니다. 반대로 논의를 하고, 유의미하게 만들고 드러내기 위해서 관찰을 하게 되겠지요. 관찰의 결과 무의미->유의미, 침묵->뉴스, 은폐->노출로 변모하는 순간을 포착하리라 기대한다면, 우리는 인터뷰를 하면서도 계속 관찰하고 있는지도 모릅니다. 쉽게 답하는 질문, 어려운 질문, 확신, 성의없음, 환영, 수다 혹은 침묵, 떠 넘기기 등등.

역시 촌평은 잠시 후에 하기로 하고, "우리는 인터뷰를 하면서도 계속 관찰하고 있는지도 모릅니다. 쉽게 답하는 질문... 등등"이라는 것은 정확하고 센스 있는 지적이지만, 이는 인류학자들이 기존에 관찰을 써먹어왔던 방식 그대로입니다. 그러니까 관찰이 인터뷰를 대체하거나 그것과 나란히 설 수 있는 인식의 수단이 아니라 여전히 인터뷰에 대해 종속적인 지위에 있다는 거죠. 그것이 나쁘다는 것이 아니라, 위 그림에서 '알려지지 않은 것'들이 차지하는 영역을 드러내기보다는 그대로 두는 습관적인 관찰의 사용법이라는 거구요. 혹 "몹시 못마땅하다는 투로 이렇게 말하였다. ..."하는 식의 인용방식이 아닐 수 있다면 모르겠습니다만.

아! 설명이 부족했습니다. 저는 관찰을 더 상위범주로 두고 인터뷰를 그 하위에 두고자 쓴 구절이었는데요. 즉 인터뷰란 통상적인 담론 속에서 분배되어 있는 '알려진 것'을 확인하는 것이 아니라 알려지지 않은 것과 아닌 것을 경계를 직시하는 하나의 수단이어야 할 것이라는 거죠.

엄청나게 심각한 댓글을 다셨던 낙장불입님 덕택에 자신의 글에 트랙백을 다는 만행을 저지릅니다. 댓글에는 트랙백을 달 수 없으니 제 글에 다는 수 밖에. (낙장불입님의 글로 트랙백 수정했습니다)

저는 '맥락'이라는 매우 편리하지만 오용되기 쉬운 개념을 정교화시키자고 주장했습니다. 본래 '맥락'이 문헌해석학에서 고안된 개념임을 떠올려보면 "부분은 전체 속에서만 이해될 수 있다"는 가르침은 정당해 보입니다. 그러나 각각의 부분들을 떠받치고 이해가능하게 해주는 그 '전체'란 누가 정의할 수 있을까요? 해석학이 오랫시간 동안 두 진영으로 나뉘어져 있던 것도 누가 혹은 무엇이 '전체의 맥락'을 확정지을 수 있는가라는 이 단순한 의문으로부터 나온다고 생각합니다. '저자의 의도'를 중시하는 진영, 좋은 해석은 저자에 의지하고 있을 뿐 아니라 독자의 활동영역이기도 하다는 진영 더 나아가 저자와 독자로부터 (상대적으로) 자유로운 텍스트 자체의 자율성을 주창하는 진영에 이르기까지 논쟁은 길게 반복됩니다.

다만 낙장불입님께서 지적하신대로 통상적인 용법에서보면 맥락은 '단속적'으로 사용됩니다. 하나의 현상으로부터 새로운 것, 흥미로운 것, 궁금한 것 등을 제거하는 역할을 하지요. 누군가에 의해 설명된 현상은 호기심을 심각하게 상실하게 됩니다.

그런데 낙장불입님께선 꺼내드신 '형태적 규칙'이란 무엇일까요? 인터뷰가 맥락을 잡기 위한 가장 유력한 방법이란 점은 저도 인정합니다. 현지에서 살고 있는 사람에게 "왜 새빨간 환타에 우유를 타서 먹느냐?"라고 묻고 그 사람에게서 "맛있고 멋있다"란 대답을 듣는 것 보다는 복잡하겠지만 그들에게 이유를 묻고 그 설명에서 타당성을 찾아내는데 인터뷰 즉 "직접 물어보기"가 흔히 사용되는 건 사실입니다. 물론 불만족스럽습니다만.

레비스트로스의 이름을 꺼내어 역사/구조의 논의로 나아간 것은 좀 갑작스럽습니다. 차라리 브로델의 '장기지속' 같은 계열을 사용하는 게 낫지 않았을까요? 왜냐하면 인터뷰가 아니라 관찰이 앞서서 지적한 '맥락'이란 개념을 보완해줄 수 있다는 명제는 묻고 답하기를 통해서는 잡히지 않는 영역을 상정합니다. 만약 그 <문답>을 넘어선 영역이 실제 현상들을 움직이고 규정하는 매우 강력한 힘을 지니고 있음을 증명하기 위해서는 실제 작동하고 있는 무엇인가를 지적하는 게 낫지 않겠습니까? 마치 낙장불입님께서 소개하신 마을 잔치에서 죽어가는 돼지의 시뻘건 피 처럼 말이죠. 혹은 늦봄인 양 더운 1월의 날씨, 주문이 밀려 대기자들이 줄을 서고 중고품이 신품 가격보다 휠씬 비싸게 거래되는 Nikon 18-200mm VR 렌즈 처럼 일상의 대화들과는 다른 차원에서 작동하는 계열들이 있습니다. (니콘 렌즈에 대해서는 조만간 글을 하나 쓸 생각입니다. 니콘렌즈의 예는 DSLR에 관심을 지니게된지라...)

맥락적인 진실의 계열과 비맥락적인 진실들의 계열이라는 아리송한 구분은 아마도 복수의 계열이 존재하고 작동하는 반면 어떤 것이 올바른 지식 혹은 진실로 인정받고 승인되는 몇몇 특권적 개열이 있다는 말이겠지요? 무엇인가를 진실로 만드는 권위를 지닌 앎의 계열을 벗어난 앎은 무지와 동일시 될 것입니다. 어떠한 계열에도 속하지 않는 앎이란 아마도 광인의 앎일테니 미치지 않고서는 알 수 없을테고 미친다면 정상인과 소통이 되지 않을테니 모르는 것과 마찬가지일테고... 그러니까 전세계의 광인들이 발작할 때 보이는 열 다섯가지 행동양식이라는 지식의 체계는매우 용감무쌍한 정신병리학적 지식의 계열에 속하며, 심각해져가는 빈부격차 때문에 급증하는 한국내 광인들의 열 다섯가지 행동양식이란 아마츄어적인 사회심리학적 지식의 계열에 속하겠지만 양쪽 모두 정신병리학이나 사회심리학이라는 지식으로 인정받기는 힘들 겁니다. 문턱을 넘기엔 좀 거칠죠. 낙장불입님께서도 "정교화된다면" 이라고 단서를 다셨습니다.
저는 비맥락적 혹은 맥락적 진실이라는 구분은 계열들 간의 힘 혹은 영향력에 의해 결정된다는 사실에 동의합니다만 거기서 "관찰"이 인터뷰를 대신할 수 있으리라 생각하지는 않습니다. 무엇에 대한 그리고 어떤 관찰이 인터뷰을 뛰어넘는 방법이 될 수 있습니까? 징후를 파악하는 의학의 방법으로부터 무엇을 배워야 합니까? 제가 최근에 본 미국 드라마, <하우스>에서는 복잡하고 어려운 환자일수록 "환자의 말은 절대로 믿지 말라"는 교훈을 반복하던데요. 한편으로는 재미있는 실마리가 될 듯도 합니다.

우선 브라가님의 호응에 힘입어 '책의 탑과 환타우유'에 달았던 댓글을 트랙백으로 바꿨습니다. 브라가님이 지적하신 문제는 최근 양양으로부터도 비판을 받았던 지점이기도 한데, 역시 이에 대한 살풀이가 필요한 것 같습니다. 방법론 리뷰를 한 번 할 필요도 느끼고요. 조만간 정식으로 트랙백을 달도록 하겠습니다. '복잡하고 어려운 환자일수록 환자의 말은 절대로 믿지 말라'는 말은 실은 병원에 다녀본 경험이 있는 환자의 입장에서 보면 의사의 권위주의의 표현인 듯하여 심히 분노를 불러일으키는 사고방식이기는 하지만, 그게 저의 문제의식과 정확히 닿아있는 표현으로 생각되고, 또 저의 문제의식의 문제점을 (중병을 앓아본 환자의 입장이라는 견지에 비추어) 지적해주는 것이기도 할 것 같습니다. 더 중요한 문제는 브라가님도 지적하셨고, 양양께서도 지적하셨듯이, "그게 뭐냐?"겠지요.

블로그계에서 흔히 퍼온 글 혹은 가져온 글을 볼 수 있습니다. 저작권 문제가 심각해서 요새는 블로그에 크리에이티브 뭐시기... 라는 배너를 붙인 분들도 많고요. 대학원 졸업을 위해서 논문을 쓰는 경우가 아니더라도 글을 써야할 경우는 여러 가지가 있다. 그러나 정작 글쓰기를 위한 매뉴얼은 턱없이 부족하거나, 정말로 '글 쓰기'에만 그치는 매뉴얼이 많다. 사람들이 글쓰기를 어려워하는 건 정말로 쓰는 것 자체가 어렵기 때문이 아니다. 블로그고 미니홈피고 돌아다녀보면 다들 주저리 주저리 잘도 쓴다. 읽어보면 표현도 기발하고, 내용도 재밌다.

논문이나 기사 따위의 글쓰기도 어려운 건 '쓰기'가 아니다. 주제를 정하고, 자료를 모아서 정리하고, 개요를 잡고, 제목을 정하는 이런 과정들이 문제다. 움베르토 에코가 쓴 <논문 잘 쓰는 법>은 이 부분에 대해 탁월한 지침을 제공하지만, 모래 섞은 밥을 씹는 듯한 번역과 출판사의 만행에 가까운 편집과 제본 때문에 여간해서 읽기가 쉽지 않다. 요 얼마간 강유원이 그의 홈페이지에 논문 쓰기 매뉴얼을 써서 올렸다. 에코의 매뉴얼에 대한 일종의 번안이라고 여기면 될 듯하다. 에코의 책에 부록으로 끼워서 팔면 좋겠다.

뜬금없이 이제 무슨 화면이랴... 그렇지만 정말 귀여운 그림이죠? Alicesoft의 전국 란스라는 게임의 한 장면을 조금 잘라서 붙인 것입니다. (이 그림이 중요한 이유는 아래서 설명드리겠습니다) 숨겨서 무엇하겠습니까? 한국에서는 미연시 라는 이상한 이름으로 분류되는 일본의 성인대상 게임입니다. 2006년 겨울 발매되어 지난 한달 동안 웹을 달구었던 대작.
미연시(미소녀 연애 시뮬레이션)에 무슨 대작이 있어? 그냥 여러 미소녀 캐릭터 중 하나를 계속 쫓아다녀서 아하고 므흣한 장면을 보는 건데... 라고 말씀하신다면 혹은 도대체 미연시라는 단어자체를 첨 들어보셨을 수도 있을까요? 흠. 검색을 통해 공부하라고 추천하기도 그렇고.

앨리스 소프트는 대단한 회사입니다. 분명 성인 대상의 게임을 만들어냄에도 불구하고 뻔하고 유치한 장르가 아니라 사람을 폐인으로 만들어버리는 '물건'들을 양산해왔지요. 앨리스 폐인들이 있습니다. 식음을 거의 전폐하고 3일 동안 게임의 엔딩을 본 후에 공략사이트를 만든 후 같은 게임을 20번 가까이 반복하면서 공략방법, 이벤트 보기, 클리어 특전 등의 정보를 모으며, <완전클리어>즉 모든 그래픽과 이벤트와 캐릭터별 클리어를 달성한 후에 앨리스소프트의 다음 작품 발매일을 달력에 표시하고 통신판매 예약합니다. 회사의 사이트는 www.alicesoft.com (일본 웹 번역 사이트에 주소를 넣으면 홈페이지 정도는 충분히 이해할 수 있습니다)

저는 위의 작품을 건드리지 않았습니다. 한번 발을 들여놓으면 현실감각을 잃는다는 것을 예전의 경험으로 알고 있기 때문입니다. 다만 전작인 란스6 (그나마 중독성이 휘얼씬 덜하다는 시스템)을 해봤고 그래서 이 시리즈의 주인공에 매우 깊은 인상을 받았습니다. 제 판단에 제 스스로도 정리하지 못한 비인간 행위자라는 개념을 명확히하는데 적합할 것 같다는 느낌도 들고 해서.

란스(Lance)는 십여편이나 지속된 앨리스소프트의 시리즈물의 주인공입니다. 널리 알려진 별명은 귀축왕. 게임 내에 등장하는 주요한 여자 캐릭터와 잠자리를 같이 하겠다는 흔들리지 않는 신념을 지니고 있고 그것을 위해 수단과 방법을 가리지 않습니다. 납치, 협박, 속임수는 예사이고 때로는 강간도 자행합니다. 되도록 강간은 하지 않으려는 듯 보이긴 하지만, 그저 자기 정당화일뿐. 예를 들어, 예쁜 여인을 발견했다. 그 여인이 산적에게 습격당해 위험에 처하고 산적을 격퇴한다. 감사를 표하는 여인을 마음 편하게 범한다 도와주었으니까. 이런 식으로. 그런 란스에게 매우 중요한 원칙이 있는데 '어린애는 건드리지 않는다'라는 원칙입니다. 일본어를 하지 못하는 저로서는 번역기에 의존할 수 밖에 없었는데요. 어린 여자아이를 "최신 저작물"이라 부르면서 보호합니다. 게임 내에서 <어린이 매춘>조직을 소탕하는 미션이 있었는데, 왜 새로 노리는 여자가 있는 것도 아닌데 굳이 일하러 가느냐는 질문에 다음과 같이 답합니다. 대충 제가 기억하는 대로 옮기면,

"네가 고기집에 갔다고 하자. 먹고 싶은 고기를 불판에 올리고 구워질 때까지 기분좋게 기다리고 있는데 아직 설익은 고기를 어떤 놈이 낼름 낼름 가져다 먹는다고 생각해봐라."

두번째의 예는 위의 그림화일입니다. 전국란스의 이벤트 중 가장 인기있는 것 중의 하나가 아닐까요? 저 여성 캐릭터는 일본 전국시대의 영웅인 켄신이고 오른쪽 아래의 남성 캐릭은 주인공 란스. 전장에서 만나 싸움을 벌이던 중 켄신이 란스에게 한 눈에 반하는 순간입니다. 이 장면은 여러 사람의 입에 오르내렸는데요. 일단 켄신이라는 영웅을 해외에서 온 란스에게 한 순간에 마음을 빼앗기는 미소녀로 그려냈다는 점. 삼국시대의 계백장군 정도를 미소녀로 만든 것과 비슷할까요? 전 일본사에 정통하지 않아서... 틀렸다면 수정해주셔요. 또 하나 일단 부하가 된 켄신의 대쉬에 란스가 당혹스러워 하며 피해다니는 이유가 흔한 이유로 "나 좋다고 달려드는 여자는 왠지 피하게 된다"가 아니라 게임을 클리어하기 위해서라는 점. (아직 해보지 않아서 확실하지 않지만 켄신과 애정도를 너무 빨리 높이면 밸런스가 무너진다고 합니다) 마지막으로 이 캐릭터와 애정도를 높여 다다르게 되는 엔딩이 그녀가 지배자가 되고 란스는 게임속의 일본을 떠나게 된다는 것.

시리즈 전체를 통해 란스라는 캐릭터가 흥미로운 것은 소위 권력자와 여성의 관계를 비틀어버린 것입니다. 보통 권력자는 많은 여성을 섭렵하고 영웅호색은 여색을 밝힌다고 하지요. 그런데 이 캐릭터는 보다 많은 여성을 섭렵하기 위하여 권력자로 살아가기를 거부합니다. 시리즈에서 일관되는 내러티브는 국왕이 되고, 통치자가 된 게임의 마지막에 새로운 여인들을 만나기 위해 모든 것을 버리고 (게임 내내 얻은 높은 능력치를 다음 시리즈에서는 모두 잃게 됩니다) 다시 방랑자로 돌아가기를 반복합니다. 영웅이기 충분한 자질과 경험을 모두 포기하는 허탈한 욕망 때문에 시리즈 내내 웃을 수 밖에 없지요.

성차(Gender)와 관련된 정치적으로 올바른 (politically correct) 기준을 유지하는 것, 반대로 그 기준의 반대항들을 모아서 또 다른 전형성을 만들어내는 것이 얼마나 빈약한 현실감각을 생성하는지를 떠올려봅시다. 현재 한국에서 벌어지는 <꼴통 페미니스트 여성부>라는 격렬한 거부반응과 그에 굴복하지 않는 여성부의 때로는 과격하고 때로는 안타까운 행보. 저는 지나친 전형성이 비현실적이라고 생각하지 않습니다. 하나의 전형성이 현실을 지배하는 경우는 매우 흔하니까요. 다만 그 만들어진 현실 자체가 매우 빈약한 경우가 많을 뿐. 게임이든 드라마든 하나의 생동감 있는 캐릭터를 만들어내는데 필요한 것이 '현실감'일테고 그 현실감이란 일관성과 의외성, 전형성과 비전형성의 적절한 조화라고 한다면 앨리스소프트가 만들어낸 란스는 놀라운 균형감각을 보여줍니다. '난봉꾼의 도덕'이 가부장적 사회질서의 뒷받침도, 로맨티시즘의 도움 없이도 성립가능하다는 예라고 볼 수 있겠죠.

제가 생각하는 비인간 행위자란 단순히 가상현실 속의 캐릭터를 의미하지는 않습니다. 이미 여러 영화나 만화 등에서 다루어왔던 상투적인 메시지 즉 인간보다 더 인간적인 사이보그, 인간의 마음을 가지게된 기계 등을 반복하고 자 하는 것도 아니고요. 귀축왕 란스의 파괴력은 성적 욕망에 충실한 젊은 남성들이 자기 자신의 모습을 거기에 투영했기 때문만이 아닙니다. 성적 욕망의 배출이라면 포르노그래피를 틀고 덤덤한 표정으로 10여분 후 티슈를 사용한 후 한번도 처음부터 끝까지 찬찬히 본 적이 없는 포르노를 꺼버리면 그만입니다. 저의 질문은 왜, 언제, 어떻게 '무엇'인가가 효과를 지니고 확장되고 작동하게 되는가 하는 것입니다. 란스는 통상의 인간보다 휠씬 더 진정한 '행위자'입니다. 그 캐릭터를 만들어내었던 캐릭터 디자이너 보다 휠씬 더 파괴적인 행위자. 란스를 캐릭터 디자이너의 의도와 전략과 이해관계로 설명할 수 있을까요? 저는 불가능하다고 생각합니다. 많은 문화연구나 분석이 캐릭터를 비롯한 비인간 행위자에 대해 분석해왔습니다만 분석자의 해박한 지식과 재치 그리고 현란한 이론적 논의들의 혼합인 경우가 많습니다. (나중에 찬찬히 리뷰할 생각입니다만) 인간보다 더 인간적인 비인간 행위자라는 식의 멋지게 들리지만 공허한 패턴을 어떻게 벗어날 수 있을 것인가....

Arcades 혹은 Blog 프로젝트

저의 블로그의 이름이기도 한 <아케이드 프로젝트>에 대해 설명해보려고 합니다. Arcades Project 는 Walter Benjamin의 책으로 2002년에 발간되었습니다. 1000페이지가 넘는 엄청난 분량인데다 이해가 불가능합니다. 미완성의 유고니까요. 다만 책의 초반에 실려있는 "Paris, Capital of the Nineteenth Century" (1939)를 통해 벤야민이 무엇을 하고자 했는지 추측해볼 수는 있습니다. 벤야민은 "I believe... in my soul, the Things."라는 Deubel 이란 사람의 도발적인 문장까지 부각시키면서 자신의 프로젝트에 대해 개괄합니다. 완결된 서문이 아니기 때문에 친절한 요약도 없습니다.

"the course of the world is an endless series of facts congealed in the form of things" (14)

(세상의 행보란, 끝없는 사실들이 사물의 형태에 고정되고 끼워 맞추어 지는 것이다) - 번역하기 힘든 문장이네;;

제가 이해한 한도에서, 벤야민의 시도는 일상생활 속에서 끊임없이 쏟아지고 사라지고 변화하는 사물들을 통해 어떤 역사적 핵심이 만들어지는지를 규명하려는 것입니다. 그래서 프로젝트의 이름이 아케이드 프로젝트. 궁극적으로 19세기이래의 모더니티에 대해 설명하려 했음에도 불구하고 벤야민은 어떤 저명한 사상가나 커다란 가설, 자본주의니 개인주의니 제국주의니 하는 것들, 대신에 19세기 초반에 파리에 세워진 대규모 건축물, 아케이드로부터 시작합니다.

아케이드는 상점들이 쭉 늘어서 있는 긴 복도의 모양을 한 건축형태입니다. 지금 우리들에겐 너무나 익숙한 모습입니다. 그러나 19세기 초반 당시에는 시대의 최고 기술력이 집결된 동경과 매혹의 대상이었습니다. 쏟아지는 상품, 철제건축의 실용화, 소비욕, 늘어나는 인구 등의 조건들이 아케이드를 별천지로 만들었고 또 아케이드 자체가 그것들을 끌어당기고 가속시켰다고 볼 수 있습니다. 그리고 백화점이라는 다른 형태가 등장하면서 서서히 세계의 중심으로서의 자리를 내어주게 됩니다. 그렇다고 해서 백화점이 그 자리를 차지한 것은 아니며 아케이드가 사라진 것도 아닙니다. 아케이드는 <박람회>로 <쇼핑 팜플렛>으로 녹아들어갔다고 봐야겠지요.

아케이드 프로젝트의 본문은 수많은 짧은 메모들과 신문기사, 서너 페이지짜리의 짧은 아티클로 이루어져 있습니다. 예를 들면, Dream houses of the collective: arcades, winter gardens, panoramas, factories, wax museums, casinos, railroad stations. [L1.3] (아케이드, 윈터가든, 파노라마, 공장, 왁스박물관, 카지노, 기차역 등은 대중들의 꿈의 집이다)

맨 뒤의 [L1.3]이란 죽을 때 남긴 노트들을 후세의 사람들이 분류하면서 붙인 번호입니다. L1이라는 노트의 3번째에 적혀있는 메모라는 의미. 이런 메모가 수백 개 이어져 있습니다. 어떤 메모는 이해불가능하고, 왜냐면 19세기의 신변잡기를 모르면 이해가 불가능한 것들이 많습니다, 어떤 메모는 불친절하고, 바로 위의 것처럼 말입니다. 대중들의 꿈의 집이 정확히 무슨 뜻이냐를 둘러싸고 여러 논쟁이 벌어질 법도 합니다.

세상에 넘쳐나는 것들이 형태를 갖추고 다른 것들을 끌어당기고 밀쳐내면서 세상은 나아갑니다. 21세기의 우리의 도시에서 <아케이드>는 무엇일까요? 지금 우리가 하고 있는 인터넷의 블로그? 소니의 플레이스테이션 3 ? 저에게 블로깅은 다른 이들과 함께 그것을 찾아내려는 시도입니다. 아마 벤야민의 1000페이지 넘는 유고처럼 미완성일 수밖에 없고 정리불가능하며 혼란스럽겠지요. 그러나 같은 이유로 중간 중간 매혹적이고 섬광과도 같은 메모를 남길 수 있으리라는 꿈을 지니고 있습니다.

  한번도 의문을 품지 않았었는데 찾아보니 Nadar라는 사람이 1864년에 찍은 Sarah Bernhardt라는 여성이군요. 19세기의 프랑스 여배우로 굉장한 인기를 누렸던 사람이라네요. 지금으로 말하면 아이돌 같은 건가. 이래서 아케이드 프로젝트란 책을 읽기가 힘들다니까요.

1. 비용이 크게 문제가 되지 않는다는 건 매우 바람직합니다. www.asurajang.net 의 도메인을 갱신하는 것 뿐 아니라 앞으로 카페24의 용량을 늘려야할 "행복한" 사태를 상상해본다면 더욱 더 그렇지요. 테터툴즈가 매우 효율적인 툴이기 때문에 새로 블로그를 추가하는데에는 그다지 용량이 많이 먹히지 않지만 여럿에게 분양한다면 1-2년 안에는 용량을 추가해야 할 것이니 말입니다. 대신 나중에 들어가면 공금으로 저에게 술 사주셔요. 초기 세팅은 제가 냈으니까. 하하.

2. 아수라장 넷이 복잡하다고 한 게 아니라 아수라장 쩜 카페이십사 쩜 콤이 복잡하다는 의미였는데... 새로운 초기화면을 만드는 데 필요한 기본 테크닉은 찾아냈지만 그 모양새가 매우 흉할 것 같습니다. 유유는 아마 자신의 블로그를 이곳으로 옮겨올 심산인 듯하니 주형군에게 물어봐야 겠군요. 하지만 앞으로 바깥의 블로그나 카페 등과 연결시킬 수 있는 방법은 계속 조금씩 진행시키겠습니다. 당장 초기화면을 만드는 것은 적어도 3일 정도는 매달려야 할 일입니다.

3. 기획토론을 위한 블로그를 하나 더 만들자는 생각에는 찬성하지만 기술적으로 기획토론장은 블로그가 될 수 없습니다. 테터툴즈에서 기본적으로 하나의 블로그의 필자는 한명뿐입니다. 트랙백을 단다고 해도 한 사람의 필자가 계속 글을 쓰고 그 아래 트랙백이 계속 달리는 모양은 매우 이상하겠지요. 같은 이유로 기획토론의 블로그의 최신내용이 지금처럼 오른쪽 사이드 메뉴에 뜨게 하는 것 역시 불가능합니다. 어떤 블로그에 트랙백으로 걸린다면 지금 낙장불입님과 저의 논의와 같이 모두 메인 메뉴에 뜨기는 하겠지만 그것들을 따로 사이드 메뉴에 묶기 위해서는 하나의 블로그 내에서 모든 논의가 이루어져야 합니다.
다시 말해서 <아수라장 기획토론>이 지금의 <공지사항>처럼 보이게 하려면 논의들 모두가 (가칭) 아수라장 기획토론에 있어야 하는데, 그럴 경우 필자가 한명으로 보이기 때문에 혼란스러울 거란 이야기. 물론 아이디와 비밀번호를 회원 모두에게 알려주면 각자 접속해서 글을 쓸 수는 있겠지만 모든 글과 반론에 <아수라>라는 이름이 붙어 있으면 우습지 않겠습니까?

4. 참... 아수라를 asula라고 표기한 건 제가 아니라 내일(1월 2일)이 생일이신 그분이랍니다. 저는 그냥 무심코 따르고 있을 뿐.

5. 블로그의 분양과 참여를 최대한 개방하자는 의견에는 완전히 찬성입니다. 일단 지금 블로그를 개설한 것이 2명이므로 만장일치군요. 블로그 연합 아수라장은 이곳에서 활동하는 사람들의 의견을 모아 그 운영방향을 결정하는 것이 옳다고 생각합니다. 하나 둘씩 자신의 블로그를 만들고 글을 올리는 사람이 늘어나면 그 사람을 운영에 참가시키는 것이 좋겠습니다. 저는 블로그를 시작한 이상 새롭게 방문하고 참여의사를 밝힌 사람들과 기존의 멤버들 사이의 어떤 차이도 부여하고 싶지 않습니다.

일단 링크를 걸어 앞으로 사용할 수 있도록 하는 데에는 찬성입니다. 그러나 위에서도 말했듯 블로그를 개설해 활동한다는 것 자체를 멤버쉽의 조건으로 한다는 원칙을 지금 둘이 합의한다면 당장은 논의할 필요가 없겠지요. 누군가 블로그를 개설하고 문제제기를 한다면 그때 논의를 시작하는게 어떻겠습니까?

7. 마지막으로 저는 기획토론이나 공동작업을 진행시키기 위한 장소가 필요하다는데 동의합니다. 다만 기술적으로 현재 구축된 다수의 블로그와 그 메타페이지 시스템에서는 불가능하다는 것이지요. 사실 지금 이 계정 내에 제로보드나 심플로그 같은 다른 시스템을 설치하면 해결가능한 문제입니다. <가입형 블로그>가 아니라 <설치형 블로그>이기 때문에 가능하답니다. 천천히 진행시키겠습니다. 이상적으로는 www.asurajang.net 은 3개의 시스템이 공존하게 되겠군요.
1. 테터에 기반한 블로그의 느슨한 연합
2. 제로보드나 심플로그에 기반한 프로젝트 혹은 공동작업을 위한 회원제 게시판의 형태
3. 외부의 블로그나 홈페이지를 연결시키기 위한 다소 복잡한 홈페이지.

세 개의 시스템이라는 장기전망과 첫째 시스템이 그 세 시스템들의 기반이요 핵심이라는 생각에 동의합니다. 기획토론 블로그, 기존블로그를 유치하는 새로운 초기화면, 기획토론 및 주제공부 공간는 새로운 기술적 대안이 나올 때까지 일단 유보하는 것이 옳을 것 같습니다. 좋은 기술적 대안이 나온다면 세 시스템이 아니라 하나의 시스템이 될 수도 있을 터이니, 뭔가 구체적 요구가 나올 때까지 기다리는 것도 방법이겠습니다. 단지, 굳이 기획토론의 공간이 당장 필요하다면, 조금 우습기는 하겠지만, 블로그 개설자들이 기획토론 블로그의 아이디와 비번을 공유한 후 글 제목 앞에 '[낙장불입]'이라든가 '[브라가] 이런 식으로 글 작성자의 이름을 단 후 제목을 적는 것도 방법일 수 있을 것 같습니다(너무 옹색한가?). 하여간 그조차도 요구가 있었을 때의 일이겠지요. 지금 이런 논의도 각자의 블로그에서 적히고 있는 것도 약간 잡은 자리가 어색한 것은 사실이지만 이건 뭐 인류의 기술발전수준이 그 정도라 그리 된 것이니만큼, 뭐 일단 이런 궁색한 모습도 처음의 모습으로는 상당히 앞선 모습이라는 점, 브라가님께 깊이 감사를 표하고 싶습니다.

환타우유라. 오른쪽의 사진을 보면 아시겠지만 우유와 환타를 반반씩 섞은 음료입니다. 우유를 컵에 부은 후 조심스럽게 환타를 위에 올리고 감상한 후 맹렬히 젓가락으로 휘저어 마시더군요. 약 2년 전 인도네시아란 나라에 '뜨리마 카시' (감사합니다)란 단어 하나만 외운채 용감히 도착한 후 좌충우돌 말을 배운 후 떠났던 여행에서 만났던 택시운전사가 마시던 음료. 같이 점심을 먹자고 권한 후 마주 앉은 나름대로 고급 식당에서 서로 할 말이 없어 어색하던 차에 그가 무심코 주문했던 것.

책의 탑은 역시 인니어를 배우던 학원에서 아르바이트 하던 인도네시아인 대학원생의 방 한구석에 놓여있던 것입니다. 어떤 느낌이 드시나요?

미국으로 돌아와 동남아시아개론의 티에이(Teaching Assistance)로 있을 때 미국의 대학생들에게 두 사진을 보여주었을 때 터져나오던 반응이 떠오릅니다. "우엑 얼마나 느끼할까?" "도대체 저 책의 탑은 무엇을 위한 것이냐? 장식이냐? 아래 쪽의 책을 뽑으면 무너질텐데 책꽂이는 없냐?" 약간은 조소하는 듯한 웃음소리.

이 둘을 '일상생활의 놀라움'이란 애매모호한 생각의 싹과 연결시키면 어떨까요? 인도네시아에 사는 사람들에게 환타우유와 책의 탑은 애기거리가 되지 못합니다. 상당히 흔한 물건들입니다. 단 것을 좋아하는 - 인도네시아 말레이시아 음식은 대체로 매우 단 맛이 납니다. 몸에 좋은 우유에 단 맛이 나는 환타를 섞는다는 발상이 꽤 재치있지요. 우유에 설탕이나 꿀을 타서 먹을 수는 없으니 말입니다. "왜 콜라가 아니라 환타냐?"란 바보같은 질문을 하니 "예쁘지 않냐? 빨간 색이 검은 색보다는 좋다"고 명쾌하게 대답하더군요. 열대의 사물들은 빨갛고 노랗게 매우 강렬합니다. 청록색 주황색 붉은색의 환타가 대인기. 게다가 환타란 서양에서 온 것이고 왠지 우유를 마시는 것보다 세련되어 보일 수도 있고 일석 삼조인가요?

책의 탑은 책을 구하려고 해도 정말 구하기 힘든 인도네시아의 대학원생에겐 매우 매우 떳떳한 물건입니다. 아래 쪽에서 <문명의 충돌>이라는 영어책을 보여준다며 빼내는 묘기를 보여주었는데요. 책받침 같은 것을 끼우고 톡톡 쳐서 재주좋게 뽑아낸 후 약간 흐트러진 책의 탑을 정성스럽게 다듬어 놓더군요. 먼 고향에서 유명대학으로 유학와 한달에 50달러 정도의 생활비를 살아가는 그에게 책꽂이가 없다고 해서 방 구석에 그냥 단층으로 책을 세워놓는 것 보다 뽀대나는 방식이었을 거라고 생각합니다. 책이 너무나 소중하니까요.

어떤 곳에서 살아가는 사람들에겐 당연해서 의문거리가 되지 못하는 것이 다른 사람에겐 생소해보일 수 있습니다. 즉각적인 반응은 미국 대학생들과 같이 웃거나 무시해버리는 것일테고. 그러나 그 생소함, 즉 놀라움은 그 물건이 본래 놓여있던 곳에 돌아가면 일상적인 것입니다. 여기까지라면 그 흔한 가르침 "맥락이 중요하다"고 말하면 그만이겠지요. 그러나 맥락이란 얼마나 편리하고도 한심한 개념입니까? 한국에서 환타가 사라져갔듯이, 빈번하게 책을 빼고 인용해야만 하는 전반적인 학계의 관행에 따르지 않으면 아마츄어 연구자를 벗어날 수 없게 되었듯이 환타우유와 책의 탑은 곧 사라질지도 모릅니다만 오래 지속될 수도 있겠지요. 설사 환타우유와 책의 탑이 사라진다해도 다른 것이 그 자리를 채우게 될 것입니다. 그 때, 환타우유와 책의 탑은 그들의 기억 속에서 다른 의미를 획득하겠지요. 한국에서 70년대의 통기타, 80년대의 최루탄, 2002년의 광화문 처럼 말이죠.

같은 지역에서든 다른 지역에서든 차이는 지식을 새롭게 만듭니다. 또 그 차이 때문에 미국에서 인기있는 <한국학>의 주제가 한국에서는 하나도 새로울 것이 없고 가치없는 것이 될 수도 있고, 한국의 뜨거운 이슈가 그들에겐 미숙한 나라가 밟아야할 전철로 받아들여질 수도 있습니다. 지식이 그것이 통용되는 곳에서 차별적 이익을 지닌다면 그 이익은 특정한 <차이>에 기반하고 있을 수 밖에 없으며, 한 지역에서 유효한 지식은 그 유통기한이 더 짧을 수도 혹은 놀랍게도 길어질 수도 있을 것입니다.

미국에서 통용되는 한국에 대한, 인도네시아에 대한 지식은 현지의 그것과는 사뭇 다릅니다. 그것이 더 우월하다고도 열등하다고도 말할 수는 없습니다만 하나의 지식이 기반하고 있는 관심의 경제(economy of interest)가 특이할 수 밖에 없다는 전제하에서 독주는 바람직하지 않겠지요. 스스로가 만들어내는 앎과 지식이 기반하고 있는 전제조건, 지식과 거리를 고려하지 않는 한, 설사 학문이라고 해도 보편성을 획득할 수는 없습니다. 다만 도대체 보편적인 지식이 존재하기나 한 걸까요? 굳이 지식-권력 (특정한 앎과 특정한 권력관계 내에서만 유효하다는 의미로 사용한다면)이란 개념에서 권력의 개념을 넓게 확장시키지 않는다고 해도 사람들이 관심을 지니는 영역 자체가 특수한데 말입니다.

현지조사 방법론, 가물가물해져가는 포즈

현지조사(Fieldwork)가 더이상 인류학의 전유물은 아니지만 여전히 교과서의 맨 처음을 장식하는 방법론인 것은 엄연한 사실입니다. 그리고 항상 따라오는 것이 참여관찰이란 단어이지요. 그렇다면 현지조사와 참여관찰이란 동의어일까요? 아니면 한 쪽이 다른 쪽보다 더 폭넓거나 상위의 개념일까요?

현지조사가 인류학 방법론을 설명하는데 더 빈번하게 사용되고 참여관찰은 그것을 설명하는데 쓰이는 점에 주목한다면 현지조사가 더 포괄적이거나 상위개념이겠지요. 그렇다면 대략적으로 아래와 같이 도식화시킬 수 있을텐데요.

인류학의 연구방법 = 현지조사 = 참여관찰+인터뷰+문헌조사+Rapport (유대?) + ? + ? 등등

<거리>를 연구하려는 저에게 있어 가장 큰 걸림돌은 인터뷰를 해야할 주요한 대상도 정서적으로 유대를 만들 사람도 불명확하다는 점이었습니다. 가장 만만한 것이 <관찰>뿐이지요. 약 500미터 남짓한 거리를 몇 시간 동안 왔다 갔다하면서 어떤 사람이 왕래하고 어떤 가게가 있고 교통량은 얼마나 되는지 등등을 체크하는 건 매우 힘든 일이지만 분명 가능합니다. 그러나 무언가 부족하다는 사실을 떨쳐버릴 수가 없었습니다. 더욱이 지도교수가 "보다 사람들 속으로 파고들어야 한다"고 충고했을 때 그 충고의 진부함에 놀랐다기 보다 그 진부함에 대항할 수 있는 어떤 논리도 가지지 못하고 있다는 사실이 부끄러웠습니다.

사람들 속으로 파고들어가라는 조언은 실상, 중요한 정보를 얻을 집단이나 사람을 찾아내 인터뷰를 하는 것 이상을 의미하지 않는다. 그러나 거리를 연구할 때 다른 사람들과 구별되는 발언자를 판별해내는 것은 쉽지 않을 뿐더러 바람직하지도 않다고 생각했습니다. 도시계획의 일방적 결정이나 거리 정비계획이나 개발계획에서 나타나는 폭력성을 드러내는 등의 의도를 가지고 있다면 인터뷰는 분명 유효한 전략입니다. 그러나 그 때의 인터뷰가 현지조사라는 묘한 아우라를 품고 있다고 말할 수 는 없으리라 생각합니다. 그렇다면 도대체 현지조사란 무엇일까?

상이한 문화들의 두드러진 차이가 존재한다는 현실에 바탕을 둔 인류학은 왜 현지조사니 참여관찰이나 하는 단어를 선택했던 것인가. 그 최초의 포즈가 지니는 급진성은 무엇이었는가. <말과 사물>의 맨 마지막 부분에서 미셀 푸코는 현대의 에피스테메 - 인식의 기반이 되는 선험적 기반이라고 주석을 달 수 있을까요- 로부터 벗어날 가능성을 지닌 두 개의 학문 전통으로 정신분석학과 인류학을 소개합니다. 제가 파악할 수 있었던 주요한 논지는 인류학이 각 사회의 존재양식 혹은 존재조건 자체에 대한 집요한 천착을 해왔다는 점이었습니다. 그에 반해 타 사회과학은 점점 전문화됨에 따라 자신의 시선의 기반 자체에 대해선 질문하지 않게 되었다는 논의일텐데요. 물론 푸코가 인류학에 대한 찬양자였다고 말할 수는 없으며, 아마도 인류학 잡지에 실린 태반의 논문에 대해, 심지어 자기 자신의 책을 여럿 인용하는 논문을 좋아하지 않으리라는 점은 쉽게 예상할 수 있습니다. 말과 사물이 인식론, 제가 이 글에서 사용한 포즈의 전제조건에 대한 논의를 진행시켰다는 사실을 상기해보면 푸코가 인정한 인류학은 순수형태로서의 인류학일 것입니다. 순수태로서의 인류학이란 무엇일까요? 인류학이라는 학문이 질기게 붙들고 있고 무언가 간직하고 있을 것 같은 그것만의 집착, 미련, 희망이 소용돌이치는 곳일 것이라 추측한다면, 저는 그것이 <현지조사>라고 생각합니다.

현지조사에 대한 메뉴얼은 그다지 사랑받지 못합니다. 그 보다는 조사자가 겪은 비공식적인 에피소드들이 휠씬 더 인기있습니다. 대부분의 에피소드들은 돌이켜보면 황당하고 우습고 당혹스럽고 신기한 일들이죠. 그곳에 현지조사라는 포즈가 명확히 정식화되지 못하고 가물가물해지지만 그와 동시에 신비화되고 공식적인 무대 뒤에서 성황을 누리는 이유가 있지 않을까요? <낯선 것을 익숙하게 하고 익숙한 것을 낯설게 한다>는 경구를 제가 아직도 아끼는 이유이기도 합니다.

초기 인류학자들의 세련되지 못한 시선이 관광객의 시선과 별다른 차이가 없다는 연구결과들을 떠올려봅시다. 그 논의를 경박하게 여행지에서의 신기한 경험을 찾아다니는 시선을 넘어 보다 과학적이고 정치적으로 올바른 방법로을 개발해야한다는 교훈을 얻기 위해서만 사용하는 사람들도 있지만 저는 다른 가능성을 보고 싶습니다. 인류학자는 어쩔 수 없이 이것 저것을 <관찰>해야 하고 놀림당해야 하고 "낙장불입"해야만 하는 시선을 지닌 자가 아닐까요? 라쿠나님의 글에서 돼지를 잡는 마을 축제에서 필름 열통을 들여가며 사진을 찍은 행동은 인류학자만의 것입니다. 아마 사진을 찍는 사람도 별로 없었겠지만 설사 있었다고 해도 돼지를 잡기 전과 후의 참여한 사람들의 기념사진이나 돼지의 숨통을 끊는 가장 결정적인 순간을 위한 사진 몇장 정도? 도대체 마을 축제를 관찰하는 말 자체가 제가 500미터의 거리를 서너 시간동안 몇 번이고 왔다 갔다 했던 우스운 짓거리와 마찬가지로 이상한 짓입니다. 축제는 노는 것이고 거리는 지나가거나 쇼핑하거나 하면 그만이죠. 인류학자는 그런 면에서 "도대체 무엇을 하는 지 모를 사람"이고 "허송세월하는 사람"이며 현지조사는 그런 면에서 매우 비경제적인 지식 습득방법입니다. 그 비효율성 때문에 현지조사는 항상 명확히 정의되지 못하는 것일테고.

저는 현지조사의 비효율성이 일종의 급진성을 품고 있다고 생각합니다. 물론 모든 비효율적인 것이 그렇다는 것은 아닙니다. 아직 더 진행시켜야할 생각이지만 한 학자의 논의를 간략히 소개하며 끝내겠습니다. Subaltern Studies로 이름을 떨친 사람 중에 Guha라는 학자가 비교적 최근에 쓴 책을 읽은 적이 있습니다. 그 책의 말미에서 그는 알쏭달쏭한 논의를 전개합니다. 인류학은 "일상생활에서의 놀라움" , wonder in Everyday life 을 포착하는 학문이라는 것이죠.
일상생활에서의 놀라움이라... 본래 개념상 일상성이란 규칙성, 도식성, 반복성 등으로 정의됩니다. 하지만 분명 그런 일상생활 속에 놀라움이 있는 것도 사실이지요. 슬픔도 열망도 집착도 모두 그 일상성에 뿌리를 박고 있습니다. 현지조사는 반복되고 고정된 패턴을 해체하고 분석하고 설명하는 동시에, 그 속에서 불쑥 불쑥 드러나는 균열을 잡아내야 한다는 의미. 통시적인 측면에서 영원히 지속되는 놀라움이란 없습니다. 어떤 충격도 일상성 속으로 편입되어 버리니까요. 충격적인 주제나 테마도 곧 익숙해지기 마련이지요. 곧바로 놀라움을 포섭해내는 새로운 논리가 상황을 무마시킬테니 말입니다. 구하의 논의는 "계속해서 그 룰이 변모해가는 놀이"라는 비트겐슈타인의 유명한 구절을 연상시킵니다. 현지조사는 규칙만을 찾아내려고 해서도 또 규칙에 지배받지 않는 무언가를 찾아내려는 목적의식에 의해서도 잡히지 않는 그 무언가를 찾으려는 시도가 아닐까요?

사람들은 그다지 관찰하지 않습니다. 관찰은 호기심과 연결되어 있습니다. 호기심이란 묘한 것인데, 자신이 모르는 무엇인가가 있다는 사실을 이미 알고 있으며 그 때문에 이미 알고 있는 것이 무효화될 가능성이 있음을 감수하는 포즈입니다. 지금 치밀하고 설득력있는 논리를 전개할 수는 없습니다만, 현지에서의 관찰이란 그 가물가물해져가는 포즈와 연관된 단어이리라 유추할 뿐입니다.

베짝은 서민들의 가장 값싼 교통수단이면서 점점 사라져가는 물건입니다. 서민 혹은 민중의 상징. 그러나 그 사실 때문에 서양의 관광객들이 한번씩은 이용하는 관광상품이기도 하죠. <값이 싸고 사라지고 있다는 사실>이 인도네시아라는 나라의 상징물이 되기 위한 필요조건인 셈입니다. 아이러니컬하게도 그 사실 때문에 베짝 운전수들은 강력한 <길드>를 형성하고 게으름을 보장받으면서도 짭짤한 이권을 챙기기도 합니다.

이런 생각을 해봅니다. 베짝과 베짝 운전수 중에 어느쪽이 주체일까. 베짝은 그저 물건일까. 아니면 배짝 운전수가 베짝이라는 행위자에 복속되는 걸까. 자본가를 인격체가 아니라 이윤창출이라는 자본의 논리에 종속하는 것으로 보고자 했던 맑스처럼, 때때로 사물과 인간의 주체/객체 관계를 뒤집어 봐야 하는 건 아닐까. 아니 대부분의 인간 행위자들이 <주체>로 남아있을 수 있는 시공간 자체가 극히 제한적이고 예외적이라 보는 것이 더 정확할지도 모르겠습니다.

베짝 운전수의 대화 중 기억나는 한토막. "베짝은 자유다. 일방통행도로도 거슬러 갈 수 있고 깡패들도 시비를 걸지 않는다. 그치만 베짝을 집에 세우고 노는 날이면 나는 자유롭지 않다."
